Following is detailed information on how the patented Auto-Forming Action™ of BackJoy works.

BackJoy is a lumbro-sacral seating orthosis that corrects posture to a “loose pack position” and restricts the flexion of gluteal spreading, which no other sitting device has addressed, whether they are ergonomic, flexible, fixed, shaped, portable, or stationary.

BackJoy is designed to affect an individual in a seated position by only supporting a small portion of the pelvis (the ischial tuberosities) rather than the entire buttocks. It is not, therefore, intended to cradle the entire buttocks. Since the design of BackJoy is based on the medically and scientifically accepted average measurements of the distance between the ischial tuberosities at the base of the pelvis (which includes averages of the world’s gender, race, height, and age), BackJoy is able to be produced in only one effective size.

BackJoy does not adhere to the principles of the anthropometrically measured S Range to provide body support and pain relief. The S-curve removes pressure loads away from the Ischial Tuberosities in an effort to maximize comfort. However, this results in the pressure being placed on the spine and pelvis because of the gluteal spreading that occurs when one is in a sitting position. This can be as injurious as incorrect posture. Continual flexion of the gluteal muscles and pelvis bones has been found to result in repetitive stress injuries to the pelvic ligaments, hip joints, and saccro-coccygeal ligaments. Because of the above conditions, it is clear that any portable S Range contour seating device will in most individuals result in repetitive stress injuries to the back.

BackJoy is effective because it provides a unique lordotic curve for each individual. BackJoy allows the individual to sit in his or her unique “loose pack position” rather than conform to static forces which attempt to soften the effects of hard surfaces on skeletal pressure points. This is why BackJoy is referred to as “The Back Orthotic™”.

The term “loose pack position” comes from the fact that when the individual’s spine is in its most preferred, neutral position, the vertebrae are stacked over one another with the least pressure and the least need for muscles to correct the sitting position. This can only be achieved with a device that promotes the forward tilt of the pelvis, such as BackJoy. BackJoy allows the spine to act as a closed kinematic chain and follow the direction of the pelvis until the spine is stopped naturally by its own ligament and muscle groups. The Auto-Forming Action™ of BackJoy, then, allows the user to find his or her unique loose pack position rather than having to conform to the previously accepted S-shaped postural position.
